The Vitocal 200-A ie brings Viessmann's engineering to a UK price point, and it's a real rival to the Vaillant aroTHERM pro. The pro keeps one advantage: Flexible Space Function lets it fit into tighter spots than the Vitocal can. Beyond that, the two sit closer together than you'd expect.
Both are R290 monobloc-style heat pumps from manufacturers with a century of heating engineering behind them. Each is aimed at a different problem.
What they share
Both use R290 refrigerant. Both are app-controlled: ViCare for Viessmann, sensoCOMFORT for Vaillant. Both qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, and both aim to bring heat pump technology to more UK homes at a more accessible price.
Where the aroTHERM pro has the edge
Flexible Space Function
This is the biggest practical difference. R290 is a flammable refrigerant, so any R290 heat pump needs a clear exclusion zone around the outdoor unit, free of ignition sources like sockets, light switches and openable windows. On a standard installation that zone runs one metre in every direction. The aroTHERM pro's Flexible Space Function runs the fan continuously at low speed, even in standby, and disperses any leaked refrigerant, which shrinks the exclusion zone down to the area below the unit. That opens up corners, tight side returns and small gardens a standard R290 heat pump can't use. There's no equivalent feature on the Vitocal 200-A ie, so it needs the standard exclusion zone. On a tight urban plot, that alone decides which heat pump fits.
Track record

The 200-A ie comes in Type 6, Type 8, Type 10 and Type 12. The aroTHERM pro tops out at 11 kW. For a larger property needing more output than the aroTHERM pro's top size, the Vitocal's Type 12 gives you room the pro doesn't.
Built-in energy ecosystem
Viessmann designed the One Base Intelligence platform to coordinate the heat pump with solar panels, battery storage and EV charging as one system, with dynamic tariff support built in. If you're planning to add solar or a battery later, that's a more joined-up starting point than a heat pump bought on its own.
Design recognition
The Vitocal 200-A ie picked up an iF Design Award in 2026 for its casing. It won't affect performance, but it matters if you care how the outdoor unit looks against the house.
Warranty and servicing
Vaillant backs the aroTHERM pro with a 5-year guarantee through Heat Geek, no extra conditions attached. Viessmann backs the Vitocal 200-A ie with a 5-year guarantee as standard, extending to 10 years if you keep it serviced regularly through Viessmann. The Vitocal can outlast the pro's cover, but only if you keep up that service plan.

Our view
If Flexible Space Function decides it for you, a tight urban plot, a small garden, anywhere close to boundaries and openings, the aroTHERM pro remains the safer default. It also has a longer UK track record, and Heat Geek has already set guarantee terms for it.
If your outdoor space isn't the constraint, the Vitocal 200-A ie is worth a serious look: Viessmann engineering, sized up to 12 kW, with an energy ecosystem built in from day one. It sits alongside the aroTHERM pro as a different set of trade-offs, not above or below it. That's #nopanacea in practice.
