Is the Viessmann Vitodens 111-W right for me?
The Viessmann Vitodens 111 storage combination boiler is exactly as it says, a combination boiler with an integrated internal storage. This means that unlike a normal combi boiler it incorporates a small unvented cylinder (or tank) so it can meet the needs of homes or buildings that have a high demand for hot water for baths and showers. A regular combi has a max flow rate for hot water of between 12-15l/m but the 111 is capable of matching an unvented cylinder output, more on that below.
The 111 is affectionately referred to as the Eleventyone by some very cool (nerdy) Viessmann installers and is a great but underutilised boiler, it ticks a lot of boxes from controllability to performance and efficiency but we'll explore more further down.
The 111 now only comes in two outputs, 26kw and 35kw and are both the same size of 600w x 480d x 900h so think of it as the same sort of width as a washing machine and normal boiler height. It's not small of course but considering it does the job of a boiler and cylinder for multiple bathroom houses it's quite impressive.
There are so many choices when looking at a new heating system, combi boilers fit in most places but can only provide a limited amount of hot water, an unvented cylinder is usually recommended for homes with more than bathrooms but obviously takes up a lot of space. The 111 is a great middle ground, it is (relatively) compact but has a great hot water output so will comfortably heat most size houses and deal with 1-3 showers with respectable recovery times. As soon as the hot water is being used the 111 starts to plate-load the cylinder so unlike a coil heat exchanger it will be very effectively transferring energy to avoid running cold.
Why are flow rates so important? Think about it in terms of your bathtub, each bath fill is at least 75 litres of which 50 litres could be from the hot water boiler or cylinder. The Vitodens 111 operates at more than 90% efficiency, so almost all the energy that it uses goes directly to producing hot water and very quickly.

The other thing that I love about the Viessmann Vitodens 111 is that it offers a high level of control. Yes, it can operate at full capacity and fill a bath in eight minutes, but it can also adjust it downward if I don't need that much power. If I don't have heating needs, and I am not in a hurry to fill my bath, I can adjust the unit down to 4.7 kW. The ability to make such an adjustment means that I am not using extra power when I don't need it.
I can make these adjustments on the backlit LCD screen right on the side of the boiler. I can also use a tado° thermostat or smartphone application to conveniently set and adjust the settings. With the app, I can even assess my water usage and make adjustments to increase efficiency even more.

What about when it is time to service your boiler? Yes, you want regular service so that you can extend the life of your boiler. Maintenance technicians love this particular boiler model. Not only is it reliable, so their tune-up jobs are simple, but you can access all the necessary parts right from the front of the unit.
